Writers’ Brief - New Urban World Journal, August 2024
About the New Urban World Journal

The New Urban World Journal has been in circulation since 2012. Starting as an expression of the International Society of Urban Mission (ISUM), the journal was handed to Urban Shalom Publishing in 2017. In 2023, the journal was restarted as a partnership between Centre for Building Better Community (CBBC) and Bakke Graduate University (BGU). Despite the various iterations of the journal it has remained true to its original purpose. In the context of a rapidly urbanising world, the journal provides a space for faith informed reflection on how to overcome some of the most pressing roadblocks to the creation of shalom. The journal is a platform for faith informed scholars, practitioners and leaders to share their thoughts, perspectives, stories and experiences on this journey.

Typically an edition will consist of:

  • 3-4 major articles of 4000 words which will be peer reviewed

  • 3-4 columns of 800 words each on various reflections from practitioners and leaders

  • Reviews and creative expression which can include reflections on books, films or music, as well as poetry or photo essays

Theme: Inspiring Urban Mission

Who or what has inspired your engagement with urban mission? Many of the pioneers of urban mission such as Ray Bakke are passing away, this gives us pause for thought about their contribution. Who are the practitioners and thinkers, whom God has used to demonstrate His Kingdom and its Shalom in new ways in the city? What new forms of mission have resulted from their work? What new models of Church/Congregational life have emerged? How has the ‘Theology of the City’ been deepened by these initiatives? How have you been shaped an inspired by their work?

In this edition of NUWJ we’d like to celebrate the achievements and legacy of some of the pioneers of urban mission practice and thinking. We’re calling for academic articles that rigorously analyse and evaluate their unique contributions to missional practice and theology and indicate how others might build on their work. We are also looking for opinion pieces from current practitioners who are pioneering in their own way. And we are seeking reviews of books that inspire us to engage in urban mission in new and innovative ways.
