CARES ACT SECTION 18004(A)(1) STUDENT PORTION

Update 10/10/2021 – BGU received a Second Grant

As a recipient of the federal funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students, the College is providing a progress report for students and concerned stakeholders to review. This information is posted 30 days after receipt of funds, will be updated every 45 days until the award period ends in April of 2021.

  1. An acknowledgment that the institution signed and returned to the Department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution has used, or intends to use, no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

Bakke Graduate University submitted the executed Certification and Agreement to the Department of Education on July 29, 2020, and then received a second grant on February 1, 2021. The college confirms it will use no less than 50% of the CARES Stimulus Funds received to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students. The College formed an Institutional Committee of administrators to oversee the dissemination process.

  1. The total amount of funds that the institution will receive or has received from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement [for] Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.

On October 14, 2020, and again on February 1, 2021, Bakke Graduate University received $1,331 in each award to students in direct Financial Aid.

  1. The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of the date of submission (i.e., as of the 30-day Report and every 45 days thereafter).

As of October 14, 2020, Bakke Graduate University has distributed all $1,331 to 3 students. One student was reimbursed for the canceled course required travel expenses incurred due to travel restrictions in the amount of $746.32.  The remainder of the funds was split evenly between 2 students each receiving $292.34.

The second grant as of February 1, 2021, Bakke Graduate University has distributed all $1,331 to 6 students. The funds were split evenly between 6 students each receiving $221.84.

  1. The estimated total number of students at the institution eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

There were 9 BGU students eligible for the CARES Funding’s first grant in October 2020.  There were 6 students eligible for the CARES Funding second grant in February 2021.

  1. The total number of students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

Bakke Graduate University has awarded CARES Funding to 3 students for the October 2020 grant.  The February 2021 second CARES Funding grant was disbursed to 6 students. 

  1. The method(s) used by the institution to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

Bakke Graduate University relied on the guidance provided by the US Department of Education to identify eligible students. The Institutional Committee agreed to reimburse the student who purchased air travel tickets to attend an onsite course.  The airline had not committed to refund the purchase.  The other two students were impacted by job loss and/or children attending school online at home causing them to pause their own educational pursuit.  The second grant was disbursed evenly to the remaining 6 active, students on February 1, 2021

  1. Any instructions, directions, or guidance provided by the institution to students concerning the Emergency Financial Aid Grants.

Bakke Graduate University sent CARES Funding communication to students via their official email accounts and through individual conversations between students and staff.  Checks were mailed to each student.
