The focus of this project is to formulate and implement reproducible practices that can lead to transformational leadership and better learning outcomes at both primary and secondary educational levels through transformational school superintendents. This research project addressed this focus by
(i) synthesizing research on issues related to policies concerned with attracting, recruiting, retaining and developing effective transformational leaders;
(ii) identifying innovative and successful policy initiatives and practices; and
(iii) facilitating exchanges of lessons and experiences among urban and suburban school superintendents.
The research examined whether school systems can strengthen the recruitment, development, and retention of their leaders, as well as raise the level of student outcomes. The study found that many school superintendents need training in transformational servant leadership, and then they must make significant, intentional efforts to practice this type of leadership. It was also found that ongoing coaching by trained consultants is helpful for superintendents desiring to exercise transformational servant leadership. This type of leadership involves a keen sense of ethics in doing what is good for the students. The project concluded by formulating findings, conclusions, and recommendations for future practices.
