This dissertation explores how interdenominational dance can serve as a transformative tool for community renewal, youth engagement, and spiritual unity in East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Guyana. The study addressed the deep-rooted denominational fragmentation and spiritual apathy, particularly among youth, by designing and implementing a movement-based, Spirit-led intervention grounded in embodied worship, servant leadership, and liberation theology.
Using a mixed methods approach, the research drew on surveys, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and participant observation to engage youth dancers, pastors, and community members from five churches. Guided by appreciative inquiry, the project captures stories of brokenness and resilience, resistance and renewal. Data revealed that while denominational divisions persist, there is a shared hunger for collaborative worship and creative expression. Interdenominational dance has emerged as a unifying language that transcends doctrinal boundaries and catalyses a sense of belonging and healing.
A transformational strategy was developed and executed through an eight-week dance training programme, culminating in a public showcase and community worship celebration. This strategy involved sermonettes, distribution of school supplies, and youth-led performances, anchored by support from church leaders, intercessory teams, and the wider community. The initiative shifted postures of fear and isolation into rhythms of togetherness and hope.
Findings suggest that when dance is reframed as sacred, purposeful, and communal, it becomes a catalyst for identity formation, intergenerational engagement, and neighbourhood revitalisation. This study offers a model for faith-based community transformation that is embodied, inclusive, and sustainable. This work stands as a tribute to the prophetic power of movement, the beauty of unified worship, and the healing that takes place when people dare to step beyond the confines of their traditions and move together toward wholeness.
