Enhancing the Role of Information and Communication Technology and Related Innovation in Alleviating Youth Unemployment in Kiambu County, Kenya

Youth unemployment remains a persistent challenge in Kiambu County, Kenya. It affects youth, families, and the country's economic growth. Various studies have confirmed the important role of ICT and related innovation in reducing the high rate of unemployment in Africa, including Kenya. The dissertation examined how enhancing the role of ICT and related innovation can address youth unemployment in Kiambu County, Kenya. It sought strategies for creating jobs for the youth by enhancing the role of ICT and related innovation, creative thinking, and digital platforms as tools to increase youth employment opportunities. Also, the project examined the barriers to ICT infrastructure, ICT usage, access to computers and smartphones, and the role of ICT platforms in connecting young people to employment opportunities.

The study employed a qualitative research design using one-on-one interviews and focus group discussions (FGD) with youth (both employed and unemployed) in Kiambu County. The data collected were systematically coded, leading to the identification of key themes that informed the analysis of the findings.

The findings demonstrated that enhancing the role of ICT and related innovation can significantly expand employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for youth. The study offered practical solutions to youth employment and policy recommendations aimed to enhance the role of ICT in job creation among youth in Kiambu County.
