This dissertation/project was designed to identify the possible causes of and to find solutions to street begging in Kano State, Nigeria, through the collaboration of Project Living Springs, Civil Awareness and Economic Empowerment Initiative “CAEI,” and other NGOs and government agencies. I have put in proper perspective the most effective approach to solving the issue of street begging in Kano State, applying the dynamics to bring solutions to street begging in the state, which will extend to other parts of Northern Nigeria and the country in general.
In this dissertation, a process of helping stakeholders to engage in better choices and options were identified. The project investigated the causes, consequences, and other issues of street begging, having a multidimensional survey designed to reach a better option and conclusions agreeable as alternatives for a better future for beggars.
The critical identification and proper solution in the discussion include
the restoration of the breakdown of the family system
identification of poverty, physical disability, national disaster, and civil war
mental illness, psychiatric disabilities, bad habits such as drug, alcohol, and gambling identified as key issues too
cultural and religious factors among ethnic groups, and rural-urban migration
Looking at the possible solutions to street begging in Kano State, Project Living Springs is of the opinion that education should be one of the possible intervention strategies to street begging in Kano State. Also, government policies and enlightenment programs on the need to go back to school, engaging the stakeholders, community leaders to create awareness in various communities are possible solutions to street begging in Kano State.
