Addressing the Decline in Writing: Why Gen Z and Gen Alpha Need a New Approach Across classrooms today, a clear pattern is emerging: many Gen Z students approach academics—especially written communication—with declining engagement, confidence, and discipline. The evidence is visible in misplaced fundamentals, weak vocabulary, limited critical thinking, and growing discomfort with structured writing. If this trend continues unaddressed, Gen Alpha will inherit and accelerate the decline, affecting the caliber of learners entering the workforce. The implications for productivity, quality output, problem- solving, and future leadership are significant.
In response, I have written Grammar Master and The Fine Art of Writing, two books designed to rebuild the foundation of written communication for middle and high-school students, which will be available on Amazon this December. Grammar Master simplifies the core elements of language—Parts of Speech, Sentence Structure, and Vocabulary—using a framework that will never change. The Fine Art of Writing advances these skills through the Seven Pillars of Writing, The Right Writing Rubric, and a clear distinction between types and styles of writing—an area often poorly defined, even online.
Beginning this year, the books will be supported by workshops and online tutorials to re-engage Gen Z and spark genuine literary transformation. Having taught English for several decades in Jamaica and the USA, and now pursuing a Master’s in Transformational Leadership, I believe stronger writing creates stronger thinkers—and ultimately, more responsible leaders.
